Sean Phelan, drum major of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps, was this year’s recipient of Drum Corp International’s Jim Jones Leadership award.
This award is given each year to one Open Class and one World Class drum major. It is named after Jim Jones one of the founding directors of Drum Corps International and a charter member of the Hall of Fame. Selections are made each year by a committee of Hall of Fame members.
Sean Phelan (22) is in his sixth and final year with the Madison Scouts, having played baritone starting in 2007 and moving to drum major for the 2011 season. Sean recently completed his Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will begin a student teaching assignment this fall. He plans to go into teaching once he’s completed his training.
“Sean represents all the attributes and values we strive to develop in our membership,” stated Scouts’ Executive Director Chris Komnick. “He continues to set new standards within our organization while tackling his role with confidence, thoughtfulness, and humility. We were honored to have him as a member of our organization and I’m confident that Sean will continue to serve this organization as a model for future Scouts.”
